In-depth 3 October 2012

Today was a very exhausting day. It’s amazing how exhausting it can be interviewing people back to back. But I was happy that I got some material which I think I can use. I spoke to a former prisoner about how he communicated with his family and some of the challenges they faced, mainly money to visit when he was incarcerated in Mangaung private prison. He read me two letters he had written to his wife and daughter, which was very moving. His face lit up as we  talked about that aspect.

I also talked to a former juvenile detainee and his sisters. They were very welcoming and eager to talk, but they were limited by their English.

I was also very lucky to meet with a social worker who works for a prisoner rehabilitation NGO and she helped me.
